They say he is extremely conservative, so it's unlikely we will see the ordination of women or gay marriage in the Catholic Church anytime soon. More disturbing are reports that he was "consistently silent" during Argentina's military dictatorships during which tens of thousands of people were "disappeared." I'm sure we'll be hearing more about this as the world media put out articles and biographies in the next few days.<br /><br />On the positive side, radio and TV reports paint a picture of a modest man who, even as a cardinal, lived in a small apartment, did his own cooking, and rode the bus to work, chatting with other commuters about his favorite soccer team. Most encouraging is the hope he will turn his attention to pastoral concerns, especially to the plight of the poor. <br /><br />Please pray for the Catholic church. Its influence reaches beyond its members. Well, no surprise there. On the plus side, they say he is a humble man, with pastoral experience working with the poor. They say he is an advocate of decentralization, and the expectation is that he will give more attention to input from bishops.
